The Florida State Park Plein Air Painting Tour – Painting each of Florida's State Parks on location
While in the keys for the Florida State Park Plein Air Tour, we couldn’t help ourselves from staying an extra day and touring Key West. We did all the touristy things tourists do! From the Southernmost Point to Sunset at Mallory Square, from Sloppy Joes to Hemmingway’s Home, we did it all.
Our home base was the Blue Marlin Hotel. It was a blast from the past with it’s bright blue neon sign and pool in the courtyard. The rooms are large and renovated and the rates can’t be beat. The first night we walked from the hotel down Duval Street to see the sunset at Mallory Square. A must see is the cat show! We also saw Scooby Doo and a many other performers keeping the crowd entertained as the sun set behind a number of sailing ships. Once the sun set we walked back down Duval and visited the shops and enjoyed dinner at a sidewalk cafe. On our walk back to the hotel, I snapped photos of all the neon signs. As we walked past one of the bars, we could see a Japanese Elvis impersonator sing his heart out, and then we saw Marilyn Monroe outside the Tropic Cinema!
The next day we rented bikes and rode around town. We toured Hemmingway’s home, it is a must see (but stay away if you are allergic to cats!). The Key West Lighthouse is across the street from Hemmingway’s. From here we rode down to the Marina parked our bikes and walked around. The art museum closed just minutes before we got there, but we did enjoy the statues outside this imposing red brick building. Hard to believe this grand structure was slated for demolition!
In no time we were hungry for dinner and we enjoyed a great meal at Black Fin Bistro. It was our best meal of the whole trip.
Enjoy the photo tour!
