The Florida State Park Plein Air Painting Tour – Painting each of Florida's State Parks on location
Hontoon Island State Park is along the St. Johns River just south of Deland. The road to the park winds past the old Deland train station and pretty scenery. As you get to the park entrance, it is just a small parking area along the river. From here you take a free ferry boat ride across the river to the park.
The park is situated on a bluff overlooking the river with great views. It also has some trails that wind around the island. There are bikes to rent and plenty of boat slips to park if you are arriving by boat.
I decided to set up my easel right along the bluff on the river and paint some fishermen (and fisher ladies!) who were sitting in the shade of a large old oak tree. The morning sun cast a bright yellow glow in the distance. Rick also fished along the shoreline while painted. It was a slow day fishing as I only saw 2 fish being caught all morning!
While I painted many motor boats and kayaks floated by, as well as an alligator. Two manatees were rolling around in the water right in front of me too. It was a lovely morning on the river. The shade of the old oaks and the breeze off the river kept me cool in the humid summer heat. As we drove home, the summer storms were building and we just managed to make it home without getting caught in the rain.
