The Florida State Park Plein Air Painting Tour – Painting each of Florida's State Parks on location

Park #78 – John Gorrie Museum State Park

After spending the morning at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, we arrived in downtown Apalachicola later in the afternoon. The museum was closed, but the grounds were park-like corner squares at the intersection of two downtown streets. In the middle of the road there was an island with two old cannons. On one corner square there was a beautiful stone monument erected in 1899 and an historic old church. Another corner square has the gravestones and marker, and the third corner square is the museum itself.

John Gorrie was a Doctor back in the mid 1800’s and he invented an ice machine to help cool yellow fever patients. Turns out he invented air conditioning – where would Florida be without his invention!

The late afternoon light was very pretty so I set up my gear in the lawn near the cannons facing the monument with live oak branches arching over.
