The Florida State Park Plein Air Painting Tour – Painting each of Florida's State Parks on location

Park #65 – Big Lagoon State Park

Big Lagoon State Park is just west of Pensacola on a large saltwater lagoon. Across the lagoon is Gulf Islands National Seashore. It was a bright sunny day the morning we arrived and we traveled all the way to the end of the park and walked the trails around to the observation tower. The boardwalks wrap around a saltwater marsh with several bridges for viewing wildlife below.

Closer to the boat ramp area, there is a totally different type of landscape of white sand scrub area with sandhill milkweeds and large rosemary bushes.

After working up an appetite, we strolled back to the picnic area and had enjoyed a lunch under the pines. While we were eating a red-head woodpecker made a surprise visit. I don’t see these too often and I was able to get a nice photo of him. After lunch I didn’t go far, as the view from the picnic area was great for painting!

    Thanks Margé!
I was surprised to see the woodpecker here. I’ve seen them before, but this is the closest one has gotten for a decent photo.
I love Florida’s wildflowers and when I don’t know one use Walter Kinglsely Taylor’s book Guide to Florida Wildflowers to identify them. It really comes in handy!
