The Florida State Park Plein Air Painting Tour – Painting each of Florida's State Parks on location

Park #60 – Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park

We arrived at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park in Cross Creek after a morning of antique shopping in Micanopy and exploring Cross Creek. This area of Florida is especially beautiful this time of year with old homes and barns and wildflowers growing just about everywhere.

I’ve been to this park many times before and started painting right away at the old sharecroppers house. The old rustic building with the roses and old overalls hanging on the line is so picturesque. I was hoping a chicken would make it’s way over so I could add one to the scene, but they stayed close to the chicks near the barn.

For those not familiar, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was a famous Florida author who wrote many short stories about Florida, and a few novels including The Yearling. Another book, Cross Creek was about her experiences and daily life at this home, which is now Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park.

The home and garden appears to be just as it always has been. Her old car in the carport is getting a bit rusty though! Be sure to take the guided tour of the home to see the old furnishings and learn about life in old Florida.
