The Florida State Park Plein Air Painting Tour – Painting each of Florida's State Parks on location
Myakka River State Park is one of Florida’s most popular parks, and for good reason. This park is one of the largest and oldest state parks. Located just east of Sarasota, the park can be crowded, especially on weekends. We arrived early on a Saturday morning and the parking area was filling up fast with bird watchers and photographers with super big lenses! I settled on a place to paint on the northern end of the park near the “bird walk”. The view was great!
After a morning of painting we drove over to the picnic area for lunch. Myakka River State Park has a cafe and nice gift shop overlooking the boat basin. From here you can get a birds eye view of the birds and alligators. Did I mention alligators? There are some biggies here! Across from the gift shop is another small shop for canoe and kayak rentals, and tickets for airboat tours.
After lunch we explored the park and saw many birds, a few deer and too many alligators to count!
If you go in the summer, be sure to look up in the trees for the wild orchids growing in the old oaks.
