Another one from the Flea Market

As you probably know by now I just love to spend a day at a good flea market! This weekend I found another vintage impressionist oil painting. The price was just too good to pass up. This one is a bit larger and Signed! The signature is H. PFEIFER, which upon googling, I could only find H. PFEIFFER – with two F’s. So I don’t think it is the same. The painting is 8.5″ x 12.5″ in a nice heavy wood carved frame. There is some writing in pencil on the back – which probably would give me the information I need, but due to some water damage and age, I just can’t read it! I’ll post it here – can you make anything out? Also, there is a partial sticker on the back which I assume is from a gallery? Only can read the letters ..mbho.. Anyone know what this could be?

Unknown Artist, Plein Air Painting - Dated Jan. 1916

My husband collects vintage fishing lures, so while out shopping around for some old plugs for his Christmas present I came across this great little painting. While I honestly tried to not buy anything for myself while out shopping, this was at a price I couldn’t refuse!

It is an 8×10″ oil on board painting. Obviously done plein air – and from the date on the back of the frame it was done in Jan 1916! The frame has a faded red stamp that reads “Newcomb Macklin Frame Company New York” – a very fine quality gold gilt carved wood frame popular with impressionists of that era. There are small pin holes in each corner where the board was pinned on the easel to paint. It is a simple scene of a house in a field with a distant hill with streaks of snow, the grass is brown & the leaves have fallen. It reminds me of work done by Pennsylvania Impressionists, but unfortunately I can not find a signature anywhere! I think the artist was experienced with bold confident brush work…

What do you think… Any ideas?

Mt. Dora in the Fall Event

This past Friday evening was the opening reception for the Mt. Dora in the Fall Plein Air painting event. I was able to complete 3 paintings, and you can see them on display through December 30th.

This is the best time of the year to visit Mt. Dora – all of the old oaks in the park are lit up and the Marina is a psychedelic mix of colorful light displays. Each weekend there will be some kind of happening such as the Christmas Walk, the Winter art stroll and more. So come on out for dinner & a light show!

Color the Coast

Oh, Ozello

Saturday – September 24th. 8am to 8pm

Come watch as we paint & enjoy a the view along the Ozello Trail. The Central Florida Plein Air Artists will be gathering at spots all along the trail to paint the fantastic scenery. Paintings will be shown at Pecks Restaurant from 6-8 for judging. Come vote for (or purchase!) your favorite painting!

Went out to Wekiva State Park with a friend this past weekend for a painting trip. We both wanted to paint some lily pads by the lake – but the gates were closed due to a private camp. So we travelled on down the way to another area of the park (away from the super crowded main spring swimming area!) to see what we could find. Just at the start of the trail near the parking area was this little deer. She stayed in her shady spot behind the trail sign & didn’t seem frightened of us at all. We were so close we couldn’t help but see her ears were covered with big fat ticks. She was rubbing against this Dogfennel plant, which is known to naturally repel fleas & ticks. Wonder how/if she knew?

Late Afternoon Pasture

Finally was able to get out and do some plein air painting this holiday weekend. A friend & I ventured out and painted this pasture land in Sumter County, FL. We parked on the side of the road and stood under a cluster of oaks & painted the scene across the pasture. Of course, after we were finished painting the cows came over the hill!

I heard that this property was approved for over 1,000 homes… I guess we’ll have to get out & paint again before rooftops replace the cows.
